lux_apollo"Popsicle, you coming to watch the election coverage?"
He tried to ignore her but the snapping gum and random bust of lights from his doorway but Jubilation Lee was never one to be ignored. He managed to turn the page in his text book before she was leaning on the book smirking up at him.
"Com'on, you can't be up here studying all the time. Even you need to take a break sometimes. And this is gonna be a historic event... Scott even said so." She smiled at him before standing up and putting her hand out.
"I need to have this done for class in the morning, Jubes. The results aren't even going to be final until the morning. They have to wait until one in the morning for Hawaii to all be in." She pouted as he tried to make excuses and eventually he just rolled his eyes and turn off his desk light. "Alright, I'll come down for a little while but I'm not staying all night."
She kissed him on the cheek before he stood up and the entire five minutes it took for them to get to the television room was spent listening to her go on about how amazing it was going to be for her home state of California to be just as good as Massachusetts once they also recognized that everyone should be able to marry, regardless of who they were in love with. She pointed out that since her state was bigger, it would be letting more people marry than Bobby's home state was. He just smiled and ruffled her hair a little before she gave Jonas a look and he vacated the couch for her and Bobby.
"Remy know dis gonna be somet'in diff'nt den de last eight years. If it not, mebbe Alpha Force be lookin' for new members, no?" The Cajun smirked as he slid easily into an empty chair and rested his feet on the table. A small lightening bolt made him sit up and nod to Storm. "Remy take de hint, chere. No need for fried Cajun."
There was a snort from the other side of the room before Jean-Paul answered. "I do not think that will work Remy. Alpha Force is a little too strict for your taste, I think. They would ask you to leave before you were able to unpack."
The projected results were coming in and it looked like Obama was in the lead. Hopefully this would be a good change. Neither of the candidates had really gone into their views on the Mutant population, but if their other standings were any indication, Obama seemed like he would be more accepting and willing to talk with Mutants instead of pushing the Registration Act through like the current administration had been threatening to do.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me!"
Storm's voice was firm but not harsh, "Language please. There are younger children here."
Bobby didn't know why he was so upset until he noticed the ticker update on the screen. Arkansas had approved a ban preventing gay couples from adopting children.
Everyone around him seemed to be talking at once. People wondering why the would base adoption on sexual preference, others talking about how their parents were heterosexual and they'd all but beaten them when their mutation showed, some of the younger kids asking why they would do that when gay couples might understand kids with mutant abilities more. And no one had an answer.
Storm cautioned them all to calm down as lights in the room started flickering and one girl suddenly blended in with the couch she was sitting on. Bobby wasn't sure what to say. He knew how his parents had reacted when he told them he was a mutant. Part of him still blamed John leaving on Ronnie. Jubilee was squeezing his hand tighter as more ballot question results were reported.
Results were showing that Arizona and Florida had passed a ban on gay marriage. He could hear Jubilee whispering under her breath but couldn't make out what she was saying. With 52% of the votes, California's Proposition 8 had also passed.
Jubilee sniffled slightly, shifting on the couch beside him to cuddle against him more and ducked her head against his shoulder. He stroked her hair slightly before noticing that everyone else had fallen silent. They were all just looking at the TV and each other. The silence only lasted for a few minutes before everyone was talking at once. Disbelief, shock and wonder at what that meant for Mutant rights, agreement and heated discussions were coming from every part of the room. The adults – those who were full teachers – stood around the room and let them talk it out. No one was using powers but those few who were getting close were quickly reminded that it was no the way to resolve anything.
Bobby felt his phone vibrating in his pocket and only half heard Jean-Paul comment that 'free' in America had to mean something different than it did in Canada. Hugging Jubilee tightly, he kissed the top of her head before moving toward the door and flipping his phone open.
"Can you believe this shit, Bobby-boy?"
He could almost feel the heat in John's voice and wondered how he knew Bobby was watching the results.
"These are the people you want to live side by side with? These are narrow-minded pricks you'd rather stand with?"
"John..."
"No, answer me, Iceman. Are these the same fucking people you think we should be working with? They can't even fucking let two people get married if they're both the same sex and you think they're going to just let us live when we're better than they are?"
Bobby walked into the hallway as the discussions continued behind him. "Don't want to live with the narrow-minded people. Not everyone feels like they do. Massachusetts allows gay marriage, should show you that not every non-mutant feels like the people in California."
John snorted on the other end of the phone. "Still a fucking boy scout. One or two states allowing it isn't the point. There shouldn't be a fucking question to begin with. 'We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal', sound familiar? So when did they fucking decide that it's equal so long as you believe the same things they do? Fuck that, man. Fuck them."
Bobby closed the front door behind him and walked down the path as John ranted, knowing that it was better to let him get it all out. He saw the glow from the cigarette as it hit the ground. Smiling a little, he went over and leaned on the car in the shadows.
Closing the phone, he slid it into his pocket before putting an arm around John. "And this doesn't mean its over. No way in hell all the people who oppose it are going to just give up. It'll be changed."
"Not the fucking point." Bobby could feel John relax a little and lean into him. "It shouldn't be something that has to be fought for, Bobby-boy. Should just be something everyone can get."
Bobby sighed a little and shrugged a shoulder. "Should be, but things don't work like that. Besides, if it doesn't change... there's still Massachusetts."
There was silence between them for a few minutes before John elbowed him in the ribs slightly, "You're such a fucking sap."
